Laguna 69 is a must-see in the Huscaran National Park in Peru. But it is a challenge really to get there. A one-day trek starts at the altitude of 3800m and it takes at least 4 hours (on foot) to reach the laguna situated at about 4700m…I have to confess that I didn’t believe I’d do it, I hadn’t taken any soroche pills and had serious breathing problems which forced me to pause every 10 steps, it was excruciating.
I set off with a group of 5 strangers; we had no map, no guide, the bus driver only pointed to show where we should go. Some people had horrible headaches, others had nausea but this trip was all about solidarity and I even had my backpack carried by a nice girl I barely knew and got helped while crossing the river with no bridge by a guy I’d never seen before, I dare say we were a highly attuned team. Furthermore, you’re exposed to such a beautiful landscape that taking a break is not that bad. And when you finally reach the lake, it is like a little peace of heaven up there and you immediately forget all the effort you made to get there…just have a look.
